A study was released and published this month on the contents of exhaled electronic cigarette vapor as compared to regular cigarette exhaled smoke. The study shows a lot of interesting things.

First, what brought this about? They list this: “Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have earned considerable attention recently as an alternative to smoking tobacco, but uncertainties about their impact on health and indoor air quality have resulted in proposals for bans on indoor e-cigarette use.”

In a nutshell, they used 4 different e-liquids and tested the contents of the vapor “exhaled” for various harmful chemicals that are known to be bad for human health versus regular cigarettes. They used mathematical formulas to determine if, in an average sized room, the vapor contains any “significant risk” to children as well as adults.

The results are striking. They confirmed that regular cigarettes were a “Significant Risk” to human health, while the electronic cigarette results showed “No Significant Risk” of harm to human health for vapor samples from e-liquids. The regular cigarette second hand smoke “approached the risk limits for adult exposure” for cancer-causing effects, while for electronic cigarettes “no vapor sample from e-liquids A-D exceeded the risk limit for either children or adults.”
